Everything You Need To Know About Dermaplaning

I know what you’re thinking – how do celebrities possess naturally glowing skin, luscious locks, and wide-awake eyes? Is it because of their good genes, partly due to their amazing team of makeup artists and hair stylists, or partly because of industry secrets? Dermaplaning is one of the latter, and chances are, even if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve seen the results.

I spoke to some of the estheticians and staff members of Destination Aesthetics and asked them to divulge this skin secret. Keep on reading to find out how YOU can use dermaplaning to remove facial hair, brighten your complexion and more.

What Is Dermaplaning?

First things first: what exactly is dermaplaning? Isabella Meyers, Licensed Esthetician at DA, says dermaplaning is a two-in-one treatment that uses a scalpel to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, as well as remove vellus hair (more commonly known as ‘peach fuzz’).

Basically, an esthetician will take a small scalpel and very gently scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes.

“A gliding oil is applied to the skin after cleansing to make each pass on the face smoother. Six to eight passes are then performed on each area on the face to ensure all dead skin and vellus hair has been removed,” explains Meyers. “Lastly, a natural enzyme peel is applied to remove any residual dead skin and vellus hair from the skin’s surface.”

What Are The Benefits Of Dermaplaning?

Benefits are dewy skin, faster cell turnover, and a smoother texture.” Physicians might recommend dermaplaning to anyone who is about to undergo a laser treatment or deep chemical peel, to allow the products to penetrate more deeply into the skin.

Meyers says there is no downtime with this treatment, other than experiencing some normal tightness, dryness and flushed skin post-procedure. “These side effects will subside as long as the skin stays hydrated and protected with a hydrating moisturizer and SPF 50” she says. “Another beautiful treatment that everyone can benefit from, even mamas-to-be!”

Meyers says it’s a great treatment for clients who are unable to use certain products or other chemical exfoliants, such as pregnant women.

Dermaplaning is quick, non-invasive and minimizes the appearance of fine lines. What’s not to love, right?

Andrea, Licensed Vocational Nurse, and Briana, Patient Care Coordinator, are both big fans.

“The treatment is quick and painless. Afterwards I felt and looked so smooth and glowy for almost eight weeks,” says Andrea.

Briana says the entire process from start to finish was relaxing.

“…My skin was insanely smooth and it completely minimized the look of my small bumps. I also noticed that my makeup looked so much smoother on my skin…” explains Briana.
